Menshealth “Master Class Braai”
Saturday had dawned and this was a good day for many reasons, The French beat our old rugby rivals the British, summer was showing what it has in stalled for us and most importantly, after a mad drive most of Friday from KZN to Gauteng chasing flights, I flew into the Cape. Shit, was I happy to see Table Mountain. My first attempt Friday had been a nearly 800km drive to OR Tambo, but just missing the flight. Then a mad dash to Lanseria, but missing that flight one as well. Back to OR Tambo, booking into a hotel. Saturday morning dawned and finally managed to get onto the first flight out. You can imagine how I was freaking out, as I had to be in Cape Town Saturday morning to do the Master cooking class for 80 Menshealth readers.
I got into Suikerbossie restaurant at 940, 10 minutes before I had to start. We had 6 dishes to prepare and cook in each session – 1 hour per session. Thanks to slick organization everything was ready, Alvia 20 grills set out. All ingredients ready, ready to roll each group consisted of 40 readers, novice chefs, but keen to learn.
The recipes we cooked were all from the hundreds of entries to the Woolworths/ Menshealth Braai competition, with a grand prize of R50-000
There was the Inebriated steak , a secret Braai sauce rumoured to be have only ever shared with Mensheath . Line fish with basil pesto , feta, and a lot more done in foil. I then added a few side dishes, Beer and Corn Braai Brood and baked garlic Field mushrooms.
We cranked up the heat and the Master class began, I was barking out instruction and the recipes, sharing simple tips and basically guiding the guys and girls through the process, ultimately showing them with a little effort, love and passion for food you can turn out a master dish. The hour up, to everyone’s astonishment they had all cooked 6 dished and what’s more now sat down and ate the fruits of their labour. Chatting to the groups after, everyone walked out proud of what they had achieved and loaded with enthusiasm to keep the Braai burning .
